Welcome! From what I see this is CKV250? Do you need a translation from what has been written about the car in Romanian? If so I can definitely help you. There are also photos of the car in 1942...

Thank you for your response. I am English and live 25 miles North of London. I work  in construction and old motor cars are my hobby / passion.

I purchased this motor car after it went to auction in 2000 and have been working to restore it ever since, doing most of the work myself.

Its "sister" car is Jaguar SS100, Chassis 39001, Reg CKV 250 which was first owned by your King Michael.

A brief history that I have discovered, mostly from this forum, is attached:

JAGUAR SS100, CHASSIS 39070, ENGINE M774E

History so far (December 2008)

A) Ordered by the Queen Mother (Princess Helena of Greece) for the Romanian Royal Household in early 1938 (Exact reason unknown - still investigating).
B) Exported to Romania in June 1938, in running chassis form with 3 ½ litre engine, to Mr Dawyl of Anglocar, Bucharest.
C) Coachwork body built by Leonida & Co., Bucharest under the direction of Jan Calcianu (Well known racing driver – worked for Bugatti)
Probably his design as he was known for streamlining his cars. Car finished in mid blue as verified by old paint under dash and under rear wheel arches.
D) Raced by Jan Calcianu and damaged in Cimpina!
Repaired in secret and returned to Royal garages.
E) Owned from approx 1947 by a Captain Cula; Flight instructor (supposed to be a gift to him by the Royal Family (King Michael) – yet to be verified. Romanian registration No. 935 O.S.
Captain Cula killed in an aviation accident and car inherited by his wife.
F) Wife had to sell car to pay a debt to a lawyer. Purchased by Engineer Nicolae, University of  Brasov (trying to contact him – he is now 83 – do not have full name nor address yet).
G) Engineer Nicolae had many adventures in car – damaged front shock absorbers hence grafting on of different type. He has a good memory of early history – (hence contact soon is important).
H) Sold by Engineer Nicolae in 1955 to a Doctor Pop Viorel living in Hunedoara (Bill of sale available and translated). He crashed car in first two weeks of ownership and it was rebuilt – maybe why some bodywork is now in steel instead of original aluminium.
Doctor Pop is no longer alive – still trying to contact any relatives.
I) History after Doctor Pop leading to discovery in Hungary, still under investigation.
J) Bodywork was poor but complete apart from doors and louvre valance under radiator. Chassis and all major running gear complete but in a terrible condition needing complete restoration. Engine and gearbox complete but needed reconditioning and rebuilding. All electrics, exhaust, carburettors, switch gear etc, missing.

Hi Nick! Whereabouts are you? I'm in Cambridge and hoping to move to London next year.

That's pretty much all I knew about the car. I know that in 1941 King Michael gave a Jaguar SS to Costache Malaxa, an old school friend, and that in 1943 the pilot Alexandru Dudu Frim was driving around a Jaguar SS with modified wings, reg no. 242-B, which according to one forum was bought directly off the king in 1942. Is this car, the photo of which I've attached and can send, 39070 or 39001?

From one forum,

Frim's Jaguar SS 100 was one of only 314 exemp.made between 1936-1939.
A splendid blue metal col. Olny two ere buil with a 3.5 liter.
After Frim bought the car in 15/6/44,many problems were due to the shortage of spares.
Even IAR couldn't manufacture all the spare parts...
The diferential ,for example, kept on breahing his teaths very shortly after each repair.
In 1963,Frim sold the car to a lawyer from Cluj (who was working as a taxi driver-we know why).
When the car was for sale again,in 1972,a young guy-Radu Portocala bought the rusty 36 years old car at the price higher then a new Dacia.
On the way to Bucharest, the car who had tires and brakes from 1948,lost 11 liters of oil in 600km.
The first person who saw the car was Dudu Frim, who got tears in his eyes.
In 1980,RP succeded smugling the car out of the country and in 1991 he finished a complete restauration.

I think this is largely fabricated history. For a long time most people thought only one Jaguar was exported to Romania, which explains some of the inconsistencies surrounding the story.

What do you know of #39001? Was it Frim's?

This, I gather, is what it looked like? I seem to remember hearing that the car was intended as a spare chassis in case of accidents, the King being known for his love of speed...

An Ernest Dawyl, British citizen I think, was arrested in Bucharest in 1948 on suspicion of espionage...

CKV 250 it was the only SS100 of HM King Mihai of Romania,  Alglocar sold your car to another person (Prince Nicolae ????), CKV 250 was a gift for HM from the Romanian Royal Marine Corp (if I remember well the very first SS with the 3485 cmc engine) .

Very soon I will have directly from HS a complete list of his cars, I already ask him about your car (after you visit me in Bucharest at RCR office) and he comfirm that he wasn't the owner of the second SS 100.

In the picture . from left, Mihai, a unknown pilot, Prince Nicolae. From the romanian royal family only Prince Nicolae was pilot , the most important race for him was 24h Le Mans (2 or 3 times). The car is a special STEYR, unfortunately the story from Mr. Rival is all that we have. HM King Mihai has pictures with all his cars, and exist also a memories book about his cars, including CKV 250, the second is not mentioned there.

Strange but HS has not memories about your car, but I will ask him again and again and maybe we will find something (is the honour president of RCR).

Dear Adrian & Automolila

Thank you again for your interest. The photo of SS100, Reg 242-B is 39001, King Michael's car with the wings (or fenders) modified and I attach his account below. Other details such as windscreen, bulkhead etc differ slightly on my car, but the front wings are very similar. The information about Alexandru Frim relates to 39001 also. This was confirmed in previous articles in Jaguar World.

King Michael has confimed to me that he does not remember my car and my further reference to 'Royal ownership' was purely due to the mention by Mr Rival in his 'chats' in 2006.

The second photograph of a 'rusty' car in pieces is my car 39070, just prior to its Auction in London.

I think that Mr Rivals comments relate to my car as the engine number is the same in the contract of sale, the colour is correct and various stories mentioning suspension damage and crashes appear to be correct. The only confusing part is the reference to the Royal household.

Clearly the coachbuilders must have seen another SS100, to get the detail right. At some time, both cars were in and arround BRASOV perhaps the owners met.
All I need now is Mr Rivals father to confirm the full story....

Adrian - I live in Ongar, about 15 miles South East of you.

KING MICHAEL'S ACCOUNT BELOW:

June 1991

SS 100 JAGUAR

This Jaguar has quite an interesting history.

It is a 1938 model produced already since 1937.
It's history starts on the 25th. of October 1937.

By tradition, in Roumania, the Crown Prince becomes an
officer at the age of 16. This was my case on that day.
On this occasion the ministry of Air and Navy of Roumania
gave me this car as a present. I kept it until 1939 when
I passed it on to a friend of mine that was in school with
me.

In 1940 when the family of this friend was getting in trouble
with our dictator, he gave it back to me. The fenders had
been modified. I then kept it until 1943 when I sold it to
an engineer test pilot at our aircraft factory in Brasov.
From then on I lost track of it.

Many, many years later, sometime in 1982 or 83 a young
Roumanian, whose father was a good friend of mine during the
war years, asked tosee.meSo I received him, and to my
great surprize he shows me a set of photographs of this
very Jaguar in a very poor state. I was really taken aback.

In short his story is that he saw an advertisement in a
Roumanian newspaper for a Jaguar. Some time later he went
to see it and found out from the owner that it had bee~:mine.
After some negotiations he managed to buy it and drove it
with great adventures to Bucharest. He tried to repair..it.
but as the news got ou, the Securitate got interested and
accused him of wanting to make royalist propaganda by having
a car that had been.mine.

He managed, somehow, to get away with it and finally left
for Greece, where his father was. After getting his Greek
nationality, how he did this I am not sure, but he got the
Roumanian customs to let the car out to Greece. It was,
however, by now in a terrible state, so he was advised by
the Jaguar Driver's Club in England to send what was left
of the car to a specialist in SS lOOs.

Daca trebuie, traduc ce am scris in engleza. Toate cele bune, Ovidiu Mazilu. Email:
